As night fell, an old neon sign flickered ” vacancy” above Mel’s Motel – the only lodging for miles on this desolate stretch of highway. The woman at the check-in desk eyed me coldly as I took a key, her painted lips tight.
The room was sparse but tidy, albeit with an indefinable air of menace. Outside, an unsettling tranquility lay over isolated cabins devoid of life. But muffled sounds soon drifted through paper-thin walls – weeping, pleading, the crack of breaking bone.
Past midnight, a young couple checked out hastily clutching rumpled belongings, eyes wide and bloodshot. Their sedan tore off into darkness as another traveler pulled into the vacant lot.
Come dawn, a janitor dragged heavy bags to waiting trucks, wisps of noxious gas leaking from split seams. In the office, the clerk sobbed before a shelf of unlabeled tapes and photos logging each tenant’s final terrified moments.
Dark fell once more, and a pair registered claiming lost highway access. Hours later, piercing screams echoed from their room before cuts abrupt. By morning, their names were erased as if they’d never passed this lonely stretch.
Seeking to flee, my pleas to cancel payment went ignored. Cold fingers grasped my shoulder from the unlit cabin behind, breathing that this place exists outside all laws of nature – and none leave its unhallowed grounds…
