As dusk fell, carnival music sounded, drawing me towards whirling lights and laughter. I wandered through crowds mingling by the carousel and game kiosks.

The carousel spun in a dizzying blur, its painted horses seeming to leer as passengers shrieked with uncontrolled mirth. At Circus Colossus, acrobats twisted in uncanny forms watched through parted tent flaps. From within echoed jeers and taunts as if joined by ghostly onlookers.

Deeper in the grounds, sounds drifted from the Fortune Teller’s curtained booth, scented smoke masking graver aromas within. Those who entered emerged transfixed, muttering of visions that gripped them in thrall.

The games enticed with flashy prizes, but those manning the booths watched with eyes that gleamed too keenly. Error and failure seemed to amuse them greatly.

As moonlight silvered the midway, a gloom overcame festivities. Laughter took on an unhinged hysteria, crowds blending into a nightmare press. Rides accelerated into chaos, flinging riders into the panicked throngs.

Towering above rose the black spire of The Big Top, shrouded in mist carrying shrieks within. I fled, slipping amid shadowed stalls now bereft of life. Only tattered bunting remained on the haunted field where unseen entities now held control of the carnival’s dark soul.
