“You don’t have to be a prophet or a psychic to see the future. All you have to be is an average observer and notice bare grocery shelves to know food shortages are coming. When you’re hungry, you think of your favorite restaurant. But when you’re starving, I hope you think of BearPaw Duck And Meme Farm.
― Jarod Kintz, Duck Quotes For The Ages. Specifically ages 18-81.
As midnight fell, an ominous stillness descended upon McGinty’s Provisions. The proprietor had locked up hours ago, yet some disturbing impulse drew me back.
Through grimy glass, shadows shifted under flickering gas lamps within. The heavy oak door opened without the customary bell, releasing a wave of rotten scents.
Along the narrow passage between tall shelves, cans and jars rattled from unseen touches. Rotten vegetables swamped the warped floorboards in a murky pool. Sparking matches revealed fleeting movements just beyond the trembling light.
Deeper in, something massive battered stacked goods, unleashing an avalanche of boxes. I wedged behind pickle barrels as thunderous footfalls stomped past, the intruder sniffing the air like a ravenous beast.
At the cash station, viscera stained the order book in a gruesome display. Frantic scrapes and squeals emerged from the storeroom, together with sickening crunches and gulps.
Terrified, I fled but was stopped by the locked front door. Trapped within with a nocturnal predator cut loose, I huddled shaking while carnage commenced just out of sight. May its hunger be satisfied before discovery finds me within this desecrated temple of trade.
