All the best gamblers do.
The glowing marquee beckoned me in with promises of fortune and fun within the legendary Casino Tropicana. Nestled on the edge of town in a grove of gnarled oak trees that seemed to twist and clutch at the night sky, the casino was said to be a hot spot for excitement in the otherwise sleepy town of Arkham.
I walked beneath the marquee, feeling the sea breeze and jazz music welcoming me into another era. Stepping inside was like walking into a dream from the 1920s. Sleek wooden floors shone as patrons in sharp suits and glittering gowns laughed and smoked. Dealers called out bids at green felt tables while roulette wheels spun and slot machines chattered happily.
All seemed perfect on the surface, but an unsettling air hung in the room. Patrons’ smiles seemed too wide, too forced. Their eyes glittered not with joy but with a desperate mania. As I wandered the floor, I noticed paintings on the wall that seemed almost alive – twisted ocean scenes that swirled with some nameless horror just beneath the waves.
It was then that above the din rose a wild, keening cry that spoke of ancient terrors better left undisturbed. The citizens of Arkham were not welcomed guests here but pieces in some unfathomable game. I fled that place, and the memory of that cry would haunt me through many years. Whatever dark power holds sway within those walls, no wealth or pleasure is worth the bargain made inside the Casino Tropicana.
