I felt once more how simple and frugal a thing is happiness: a glass of wine, a roast chestnut, a wretched little brazier, the sound of the sea. Nothing else.
― Nikos Kazantzakis, Zorba the Greek
The Sea Side Cottage nestled alone on the bluff’s remote edge, battered by winter winds shrieking off the roiling surf below. Through salt-sprayed windows, the sole lamp’s warm gleam beckoned like a lone star amid gathering gloom.
Inside, wood stove embers lent the only warmth against creeping damp. Photo albums bore images of vacationing families long since moved on. Scratches scored the hardwood hinted at more feral residents in the lonely off-season.
A storm was blowing in, waves crashing against jagged rocks with mounting violence. Through it all, a rhythmic tapping emerged from attic access, like fingers rapping for release. When a timber cracked like splintering bone above, I fled upstairs to investigate the source.
Pale claw prints scarred the ladder leading into ominous shadows. Through them seeped whispers in a language not meant for living throats. A towering form detached from the dark, lunging with limbs too gangly and joints too fluid.
It grasped me in grip like plunging into briny deeps, dragging me toward a window flung wide. From crashing breakers emerged larger silhouettes answering the night’s call with bellows that curdled the blood. Their queen pulled me into final embrace as floods consumed the cottage, bearing me down to fathomless realms where even dreams dare not follow. Now the tides have claimed another soul to Cove’s End. None can escape the grasp of the tide and its mistress.
